The big question is – can we get enough nutrients from the food we eat to help ward off disease and illness? In relation to this question there seem to be three different schools of thought.
-One school of thought is that we should get enough nutrition to keep us safe if we consume lots of different fruits and vegetables. It’s suggested in the American Dietary Guidelines that we consume five to thirteen servings of fruit and vegetables a day. I don’t know anyone who eats that many meals every day and I don’t think a lot of people would do that. A lot of people buy their dinner from taking food shops away from work on their way home, and while there are more nutritious take-out food shops opening up, they still don’t have a lot of fruits and vegetables. However, the fruits and vegetables we consume need to be new and cultivated from soil rich in nutrients. The food we eat is not pure these days, because of toxins and toxic chemicals in our atmosphere. The nutritional benefits that we could reap from food have declined over the last several decades. Farmers used to rotate crops years ago to improve the quality of the harvest, but this is not occurring now. Only crops that are grown organically are susceptible to the same contaminants as other products, when raised in a protected environment.
-Another school of thought is that after evaluation of a deficiency in our diet different drugs may be obtained. Of starters, it may be advisable to take zinc or iron supplements of people with signs of a zinc deficiency or iron deficiency.
The third school of thought is that prevention is better than cure, so consuming a whole variety of vitamins and minerals is safest. In addition to vitamins and minerals, fruits such as açaí, noni, mangosteen, goji and amla are deemed nutritionally superior to those derived from other plants, with more health benefits. Evidence has shown that some of those fruits can help protect the body against infection, harmful bacteria, oxidative stress, mental disorders, heart damage and high cholesterol.
